Nutcase the Fox

Nutcase when he was unable to walk - March 2003.

Nutcase is a tame fox that was brought into the hospital in February 2003. When he came to use, he couldn’t walk as he was suffering from acute arthritis – this is probably one of the main reasons why he was abandoned. An injured wild fox is a very difficult patient to treat due to its acute fear of humans, however because nutcase was tame and obviously used to being handled, treatment was easier for us although still very time consuming.Treatment consisted of many pills and potions, he had to be turned several times a day to prevent sores and washed in the shower after he had been to the toilet due to his incontinence. Physiotherapy was carried out every day to try to prevent too much muscle wastage from occurring. He had an infected foot, which needed cleaning and bandaging every day.

His placid, gentle nature made it easier for us to treat him.It took three months of intensive treatment – many pills and potions and a lot of time and care before nutcase started to show signs of improvement.

Gradually he became stronger and with help, was able to stand and walk. By May, Nutcase was able to walk by himself without assistance although he was very unsteady on his feet – this was mainly to do with us, his new family because he craves human affection so much. There is nothing he likes more than stretching out on the couch in the evening to watch a bit of TV and have a cuddle!
